Murari Pancharatnam is a beautiful Sanskrit stotra dedicated to Lord Krishna. It was composed by the revered Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher, theologian and spiritual guru of ancient India. This stotra praises the divine qualities of Lord Krishna and seeks his blessings. Each verse of this stotra ends with the sentence “Mooko’smi te’nghrikamalam tadativ dhanyam” which means “O Murari (Krishna), I am mute and speechless, I feel extremely blessed after seeing your lotus feet.
yatsēvanēna pitṛmātṛsahōdarāṇāṃ
chittaṃ na mōhamahimā malinaṃ karōti ।
itthaṃ samīkṣya tava bhaktajanānmurārē
mūkō’smi tē’ṅghrikamalaṃ tadatīva dhanyam ॥ 1 ॥
यत्सेवनेन पितृमातृसहोदराणां
चित्तं न मोहमहिमा मलिनं करोति ।
इत्थं समीक्ष्य तव भक्तजनान्मुरारे
मूकोऽस्मि तेऽङ्घ्रिकमलं तदतीव धन्यम् ॥ 1 ॥
By serving father, mother and siblings (brothers and sisters), the mind remains free from the ego of attachment and is not impure by delusion. Thus seeing Thy devotees, O Murari (Krsna), I am silent and speechless, I feel very blessed to see thy lotus feet. ॥ 1 ॥
(In this verse, Adi Shankaracharya expresses that contemplation of Lord Krishna’s lotus feet purifies the mind and removes confusion.) The devotee feels blessed and free from meditation. )
yē yē vilagnamanasaḥ sukhamāptukāmāḥ
tē tē bhavanti jagadudbhavamōhaśūnyāḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā vinaṣṭadhanadhānyagṛhānmurārē
mūkō’smi tē’ṅghrikamalaṃ tadatīva dhanyam ॥ 2 ॥
ये ये विलग्नमनसः सुखमाप्तुकामाः
ते ते भवन्ति जगदुद्भवमोहशून्याः ।
दृष्ट्वा विनष्टधनधान्यगृहान्मुरारे
मूकोऽस्मि तेऽङ्घ्रिकमलं तदतीव धन्यम् ॥ 2 ॥
Those who seek happiness from the detachment of the mind become void of attachment to the emergence of the world. Seeing the destruction of wealth, grain, and home, O Murare (Krishna), I am dumb and speechless, I feel very blessed to see your lotus feet. ॥ 2 ॥
( This verse depicts the feeling of self-satisfaction and detachment, where the devotee finds happiness at the feet of the Lord despite the destruction of material possessions. Here Shrimad Shankaracharya Ji highlights that those who immerse their mind in the name of Krishna and seek happiness, their worldly attachments disappear. The sight of Krishna’s feet makes him really lucky. )
vastrāṇi digvalayamāvasatiḥ śmaśānē
pātraṃ kapālamapi muṇḍavibhūṣaṇāni ।
rudrē prasādamachalaṃ tava vīkṣya śaurē
mūkō’smi tē’ṅghrikamalaṃ tadatīva dhanyam ॥ 3 ॥
वस्त्राणि दिग्वलयमावसतिः श्मशाने
पात्रं कपालमपि मुण्डविभूषणानि ।
रुद्रे प्रसादमचलं तव वीक्ष्य शौरे
मूकोऽस्मि तेऽङ्घ्रिकमलं तदतीव धन्यम् ॥ 3 ॥
Directions as clothes, cremation ground as dwelling, skull as vessel and munda as ornament. O Shore (Krishna), seeing the immovable offerings of Rudra (Shiva), I am dumb, I feel very blessed to see your lotus feet.॥ 3 ॥
(Adi Shankaracharya describes how ascetics, who wear minimal clothes and live in the cremation ground, feel satisfied seeing the grace of Lord Shiva (also known as Shourie). They humbly admit that they too feel blessed by Krishna’s feet. This verse depicts the feeling of self-satisfaction and detachment, where the devotee finds happiness at the feet of the Lord even in the absence of material possessions. )
yatkīrtigāyanaparasya vidhātṛsūnōḥ
kaupīnamaiṇamajinaṃ vipulāṃ vibhūtim ।
svasyārtha digbhramaṇamīkṣya tu sārvakālaṃ
mūkō’smi tē’ṅghrikamalaṃ tadatīva dhanyam ॥ 4 ॥
यत्कीर्तिगायनपरस्य विधातृसूनोः
कौपीनमैणमजिनं विपुलां विभूतिम् ।
स्वस्यार्थ दिग्भ्रमणमीक्ष्य तु सार्वकालं
मूकोऽस्मि तेऽङ्घ्रिकमलं तदतीव धन्यम् ॥ 4 ॥
Those sons of the Creator, for the purpose of their welfare, wearing only loincloth, deer bark and coir, keep roaming in every direction, engrossed in singing and praising the Lord, O Lord (Krishna), such devotees of yours Seeing this, I am silent and speechless, I feel extremely blessed to see your lotus feet.॥ 4 ॥
(This verse depicts the depth of renunciation and devotion, where the devotee finds eternal happiness at the feet of the Lord. Adi Shankara wonders at the fame of Krishna’s name, which is beyond the sun and the moon. Even if one If one looks at the feet of Shri Krishna while wandering aimlessly, it brings immense fortune in his life.)
yadvīkṣaṇē dhṛtadhiyāmaśanaṃ phalādi
vāsō’pi nirjinavanē girikandarāsu ।
vāsāṃsi valkalamayāni vilōkya chaivaṃ
mūkō’smi tē’ṅghrikamalaṃ tadatīva dhanyam ॥ 5 ॥
यद्वीक्षणे धृतधियामशनं फलादि
वासोऽपि निर्जिनवने गिरिकन्दरासु ।
वासांसि वल्कलमयानि विलोक्य चैवं
मूकोऽस्मि तेऽङ्घ्रिकमलं तदतीव धन्यम् ॥ 5 ॥
Those who see only fruits as their food in their sight, who reside in deserted forests or in mountain caves, who wear clothes made of bark, I am mute and speechless, O Murare (Krishna), at your lotus feet. I feel extremely blessed to see it. 5॥
(This verse reflects the simplicity and renunciation of the life of the saints and also how the devotees find their completeness at the feet of the Lord.)
stōtraṃ pādāmbujasyaitachChrīśasya vijitēndriyaḥ ।
paṭhitvā tatpadaṃ yāti ślōkārthajñastu yō naraḥ ॥ 6 ॥
स्तोत्रं पादाम्बुजस्यैतच्छ्रीशस्य विजितेन्द्रियः ।
पठित्वा तत्पदं याति श्लोकार्थज्ञस्तु यो नरः ॥ 6 ॥
Whoever reads this stotra of Lord Krishna by understanding the verses and knowing their meaning, such a person becomes knowledgeable and conquers the senses and definitely reaches the abode of God.
(Adi Shankara concludes by saying that reciting this stotra with devotion leads to victory over the senses. One who understands its meaning becomes wise and blessed.)
