About Lord Govind
Govindeti sadaa dhyanam, sadaa Govinda keerthanam
“govindo govidam patih”
Lord Sri Krishna is popularly called as Govinda.
Govind means the One who is the Lord of Cows, Protector of Cows, Cowherd, the one who has lifted the hill called Govardhan Giri with His little finger to save and protect the Cows and Cowherds, also the one who is the Protector of Earth. Little Kanhaiya lifted Govardhan Parvat to save the people and all cows of Gokul from heavy rains, floods, hailstones, thunderstorms and cyclones. He lifted it for seven days and seven nights. He was five years when he did this miracle. That is why he is being called as Govinda.
Interesting Story behind name Govinda:
Vrajvaasis, the people in Gokul, planned to do Indra yagya in the leadership of Nandgop, as it was done every year. Krishna thought to show a Lila and decided to teach the arrogant Indra a lesson. He advised them to pray for Govardhan mountain. He explained that trees, mountains and this nature is responsible for getting rains. Indra doesn’t deserve credit for getting rains. Then gokulvasi dropped the plan of doing Indra yagya following his words and performed Govardhan Puja Instead.
Seeing that Indra filled with frustration. Indra started getting angry. All other Gods were enjoying this Lila of Krishna as they knew about Krishna, that He was the Supreme Lord born as Pari Purna Avtaar. Indra came along with the Gods like Varuna, Malaya, Maarut, Thunder. He showed his anger in extremity by falling continuous rains in Gokul for seven days and nights . As people of Gokul got frightened seeing this, Krishna started raising the mountain on the tip of his little finger. He called all the people to come under the mountain along with their cows, vessels, food items etc. They followed his words.
Indra rained continuously thinking that Krishna might get tired. All clouds and thunders got weak and Indra felf ashamed and left. Vraj people got surprised with astonishment and thought that all that happened because of the power and boon of Govardhana Giri. Afterwards Indra came along with Airavat(Elephantin heaven), Ganga and Surbhi (cow in heaven) in Gokul. Airavat did Abhishekam with Ganga, and Surabhi with its milk. Indra bowed in front of him and finished Pattabhishekam.Indra performed Govind Pattabhishekam for Krishna, and then said, “I am Indra who is Lord of the celestials. You are Lord of the cows, and hence You are Govinda.”Indra kept the name of Krishna as Govinda as he is leader of all cows. Narad and other Maharshis got delighted with this activity.
- Govind also means the One Who is the protector of Vedas and who is eulogized by Vedas and who can be obtained by the knowledge of sacred scripts. This may be as a reference to Lord Vishnu’s avatara as Hayagriva, in which He rescued the Vedas from the demons Madhu and Kaitabh.
- Go means Vedas (knowledge) and Vind means getting or to obtain or to find.
- Go also means the one who helps us to survive or surmount the earthly existence and reach Supreme realization.
Lord Krishna is also known as Gopal the protector of cows.
Govind and Gopal names are the names of Lord Vishnu also popularly addressed to Krishna, referring to his youthful activity as a cowherd boy. These names appear as the 187th and the 539th name of Lord Vishnu in Vishnu Sahasranama.
The sages call Krishna “Govinda” as He pervades all the worlds, giving them power. it means “He who is known by Vedic words alone“.
While the Lord is praised through His many names, the name of Govinda has special place.
‘Go’ also means Earth. Since as Shwet Varah, He rescued Bhooma Devi from the clutches of the asur Hiranyaksha, He is addressed as Govinda.
Since He measured the Earth in three steps in Varah Avatar , He is known as Govinda.
‘Go’ also means cow. Since as Krishna, He was a cowherd, Krishna may also be referred to as Govinda.
He is Govinda because He gives us the power of speech.
Govinda is the name we must utter before we eat anything.
When Draupadi was being disrobed by Dushasan, she cried, “Govind, Pundareekaksh, raksha mam sharanagatam.” Thus she is saved by uttering the name Govind.
Go in Sanskrit has many synonyms. ” Go – Cows, Go – Earth, Go – Mountains, Go – rays, Go -words, Go – Upanishads, Go – senses “
Govindashtakam-Prayer to Lord Krishna
Glory of Lord Name:
Govindashtakam-Prayer to Lord Krishna
Krishna likes this Govind name very much.We can chant this name in all situations. There is no principle to take His any Name. Anyone, any time, anywhere and everywhere is eligible to recite name of Lord to get salvation. One should chant Ram,Krishna, Hari, Narayan, Govind , Gopal, Radhe, etc. any name whichever name attracts you. First do practise of chanting on rosary or Jap Mala. Then gradually increase the number of rounds of chanting. There comes a time when you don’t need rosary to chant his name.Your mind automatically starts chanting it and chanting continues in your heart continuously. One has to reach that stage where one need not remember or try to remember God but He should be always there in your heart and mind.If we really want to attain salvation from this cycle of birth and death and thats too in this Kaliyug where it is very difficult to concentrate your mind on God.So Name Chanting or Naam Jap or Naam Sankirtan is the only solution suggested in Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads to get Moksha or salvation for the souls of this Age of Kali.
In Kali Yug there is no other way to save the souls or salvation of souls other than the Name Sankirtan.
