Shri Shaligram Stotra has been mentioned in Shri Bhavishyottara Purana. Shri Shaligrama Stotra was given to King Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna. King Yudhisthira asks Lord Krishna about the significance of the Shaligram sila. Lord Krishna Replies that Shaligram Shilas found on the bank of river Gandaki are very precious and significant. These shilas are considered to be directly Lord Vishnu himself and the person who worships or even keeps in the house or bathes the Shaligram and drinks water or pour those waters on their head, that man becomes free from all sin and it prevents from untimely death. That person becomes free from all sin and all material disease. As per Shri Shaligram Stotra the person who does snan (bathing) of Shaligram with chakra everyday get gets rid of all sin like Bramahatya (Killing a Brhamin) , and if he drinks such water daily gets the equal boon of thousand of havan (fire sacrifices) of Lord Vishnu. The person, who worships Shaligram with Tulsi leaf daily, gets the boon of million Yajna also. Shri Shaligram Stotra is very beneficial for mankind.
According to Padmapuran – There is an important place named Shaligram Sthal in a region of Gandaki i.e. Narayani River; The stone coming out from there is called Shaligram. The sins of crores of births are destroyed by just touching the Shaligram stone. Then if it is worshipped, then what is there to say about its results; He is going to take you closer to God. Due to the merit of many births, if one gets a Shri Krishna stone with the symbol of Goshpad, then by worshiping it, the rebirth of a person comes to an end. First the Shaligram-stone should be examined; It is better if it is black and smooth. If its blackness is less then it is considered to be of medium grade and if there is a mixture of any other color in it then it is going to give mixed results.Just as the fire always hidden inside wood comes out when it is churned, in the same way Lord Vishnu, despite being present everywhere, is especially expressed in the Shaligram rock. One who daily worships the twelve Shaligram idols of Dwarka containing the Shila-Gomti Chakra, is revered in the Vaikuntha world. The person who visits the cave inside the Shaligram-stone, his ancestors are satisfied and reside in heaven till the end of the Kalpa. The place where the stone of Dwarkapuri i.e. Gomti Chakra resides is considered to be Vaikuntha Loka; The person who dies there goes to Vishnudham. The one who puts a price on the Shaligram-Shila, the one who sells it, the one who approves the sale and the one who tests it and supports the price, all of them go to hell. Therefore, one should stop buying and selling Shaligram Shila and Gomti Chakra.Lord Shaligram appeared from the place of Shaligram and Gomti Chakra appeared from Dwarka – wherever these two deities meet, there is no doubt in attaining salvation. Lord Shaligram, equipped with Gomati Chakra, marked with many Chakras and shaped like Chakrasana-Shila, who appeared from Dwarka, is the real Chitswarup Niranjan Paramatma. Salutations to Shaligram in Omkar form and Nityananda form.

The name of the place described in it is Gandaki which is situated on the border between Nepal and India. Along with this, it also tells about Mahakshetravasundhara, which is spread over an area of 10 yojanas. In this, it has been told about Shaligram Shila on the northern bank of river Gandaki, south of Giriraj Himalaya.} On the northern bank of Ganga, on the southern bank is the abode of the king of mountains, Himalaya. Here the earth of large areas is ten yojanas wide. ॥2॥
Shaligram is the form of Lord Vishnu, while Goddess Dwaravati is his wife. Liberation is achieved at the confluence of these two. Where both meet, there is liberation, there is no doubt about it.3
Where there is a confluence of Shaligram Shila and Dwaravati Shila, one definitely attains salvation at that place. Where there is a stone of Shaligram, there is also a stone of Dwaravati. There is no doubt that in a place where both meet, there is liberation.4
(The mountains known as the Himalaya are situated on the bank of river Gandaki. In the south of this Himalaya a big and beautiful tract of land is situated where you can find saligrams sila. This is the place where Devi Dwarabati begins. This place is called by those who know, Sri Mukti Kshetra.)

It describes the characteristics of the Shaligram form of Lord Vishnu. Particularly described are the physical features of Lord Vishnu’s forehead, which is adorned with a golden mark like a half moon. “There is an offering of Shesha on the forehead, and pure gold on the head. The golden chakra is the symbol of Vamandev. Vamandev’s chakras are golden in color and gold is spread on his forehead.॥23॥
The chakra on the left is of Krishna-varna (black) and on the right is Pingala-varna (yellow). Yellow or black color with a chakra on the left side is considered to be Lakshmi Narasimha Shaligram Shila. Mainly, to identify Shalagram, the long chakra should be situated on the forehead, changing from black color to pink color. Different colors of Lakshmi, Nrisimha and other deities are visible.॥24॥

Ten incarnations of God are seen in different forms and by worshiping Lord Vishnu in that order one attains the desired state.॥30॥
The sins of Brahmin killing are innumerable and the sins of millions of Brahmin killings are unimaginable and cannot be remedied except by eating food offered to Lord Vishnu. Crores of sins, which are impossible to commit and which are impossible to avoid, are destroyed by eating food offered to Lord Vishnu .॥31॥
By drinking the water of Vishnu’s feet the sins of crores of births are destroyed. One who drinks the water washed at the feet of Lord Vishnu can be freed from all the sins accumulated over millions of births. Therefore, the sin of killing a Brahmin, which is considered eight times more serious than killing a cow, is destroyed by drinking such water. The fall of such a drop of water on the ground results in eight times more sin.॥32॥
(There are various types of description available for Lord Vishnu’s ten primary incarnation therefore the Lord’s incarnation Shree Saligram’s worship, the Prayer to the Saligram and drinking the Lord’s bathing water wash away sins of million lives and one gets great prosperity, wealth and reputation through this, so everyone everywhere the Saligram should be worshiped.)
